Heyl St Piran Singers were formed in September 2008, following an advert in the local press by Ann Birch, Director of Music. Approximately 20 ladies nervously attended the first rehearsal. Some were already in other choirs, some had been in a choir, some had not sung since their school days and some had never sung in a choir before, all of whom attended because they enjoyed singing.
Through the kind generosity of our new President, we were able to pay our first months rent for the rehearsal room.
Within the first few weeks a committee was formed and our name and a suitable uniform was decided upon. A scarf made from the St Piran Dress Tartan matched our name perfectly, but being a newly formed choir we had no funds, so the original members bought their own scarves, scarf ring and white blouse, with either a black long skirt or trousers.
We now have a proper uniform which consists of a red blouse, St Piran Dress Tartan scarf and Celtic scarf ring, new members only need to provide their own black skirt or trousers.
Ann, together with Una Skellington our pianist, worked their magic with us very quickly and soon we were able to perform at the Christmas Carol Service at Ventonleague Chapel in Hayle.
We were well received and the feedback from the audience was very encouraging and so our confidence grew along with our membership.
As a new choir and still needing to build up our repertoire, we are very grateful to the Praze Hayle Male Choir for allowing us to guest with them in various concerts.
In October 2010 we were invited to sing in Holland and we had a fantastic time.
We use a wide variety of music, from Choral to Musicals and from Popular Music to Operatic.
